The short answer: the best IPTV player depends on your device
The best IPTV player is the one your device’s official app store offers, with the login type and TV guide you need. No single app wins everywhere: TiviMate is built for Android TV boxes, Smarters Player Lite and VLC cover Apple devices, and IPTVnator, VLC or Kodi handle computers.

Here are the quick picks:
- Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV boxes: TiviMate.
- iPhone, iPad and Apple TV: Smarters Player Lite, or VLC if you want it free.
- Samsung TVs: whatever Samsung’s store lists, which includes IPTV Smarters Pro.
- Windows, Mac and Linux: IPTVnator, VLC or Kodi.
Each pick is explained in its own device section below.
The device comes first because most TVs only install apps from their own store. Samsung says it plainly: “Only apps available in the App store can be installed on the Smart TV” (Samsung US support).
Roku works the same way, and its apps come only from the Roku Streaming Store. A player that tops someone’s list is no use if your TV’s store does not carry it.
If you are new to all this, start with how IPTV works. In short, the player is only the app, and the channels come from somewhere else.
The table below compares the seven players in this guide, using only what each developer’s own listing or repository says.
| Player | Runs on (per its listing) | Logins and TV guide | Price model |
|---|---|---|---|
| TiviMate | Android TV boxes (not touch) | M3U, Xtream Codes, Stalker; EPG grid | Free + paid premium |
| IPTV Smarters Pro | Samsung TVs (US store) | Xtream Codes; EPG | Free |
| Smarters Player Lite | iPhone, iPad, Apple TV | M3U; guide not stated | Free + $1.99 premium |
| GSE Smart IPTV Player (App Store listing) | iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro | M3U, Xtream Codes; guide not stated | Free + $4.99/month to $29.99 lifetime |
| VLC | Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV | Stream link or playlist; no guide focus | Free, open source |
| IPTVnator | Windows, Mac, Linux, web | M3U, Xtream Codes, Stalker; XMLTV guide | Free, open source |
| Kodi + PVR IPTV Simple Client | Wherever Kodi runs | M3U; XMLTV guide | Free, open source |

“Guide not stated” means the listing does not say, not that the feature is missing.
Best IPTV player for Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV
TiviMate is the pick for a TV box. Its developer, Armobsoft FZE, says on the app’s Google Play listing that TiviMate is “designed for Android TV and remote control navigation”. The same listing says it is “not optimized for touch devices such as phones or tablets”. So TiviMate belongs on the box under your TV, not on your phone.
TiviMate accepts the three common login types: M3U playlists, Xtream Codes and Stalker Portal. It shows the TV guide (EPG) as a grid, with channels down the side and times across the top, the way a cable listing looks.

Is TiviMate Premium worth it? Premium is a paid upgrade. The developer says it “unlocks application features only” and “does not include, or provide access to, any channels”. Premium is worth it only if you watch on a TV box every day and will use the extra features. The price is set in the store and can change, so check it there before you pay.
Getting TiviMate is simple on Google TV, which installs apps from Search or the Apps tab (Google TV Help). If you choose it, our guide to setting up TiviMate Premium walks you through the first launch.
A Fire TV stick follows the same remote-first logic, since you control it from the couch rather than a touchscreen. PlayTVX already documents a full setup on that device in our Fire TV setup guide, using IPTV Smarters Pro.

Best IPTV player for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV
On Apple devices, the IPTV Smarters developer, WHMCS Smarters, publishes its player as Smarters Player Lite. Smarters Player Lite is free, with a $1.99 premium upgrade. The app runs on iPhone and iPad (iOS 15.6 or later) and Apple TV (tvOS 12.0 or later), and it plays M3U playlists.
The Smarters Player Lite listing says the app “does not provide, host, sell, or promote any media content” (App Store listing).
An App Store listing titled “GSE Smart IPTV Player Live TV” is also free to download, and it supports both M3U and Xtream Codes. Its premium tier is sold as a subscription, from $4.99 a month up to $29.99 for lifetime access (App Store listing). Before you choose it, check whether the plan you pick renews on its own.
VLC is the no-cost fallback. VideoLAN describes it as “completely free and open source”, and it runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV (VLC on the App Store). VLC plays a stream link well, but it is not built around a TV guide.
Check your Apple TV model before you choose anything. Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD get their apps from the App Store. Apple TV (3rd generation) has no App Store, so it cannot add an IPTV player at all (Apple Support).
For longer lists, see our guides to IPTV players for iPhone and iPad and IPTV players for Apple TV.
Best IPTV player for Samsung, LG and Roku TVs
On a smart TV, the store decides, not the reviewer. As Samsung’s own rule above shows, you cannot install a player the TV’s store does not list, however highly someone rates it.
On Samsung TVs, IPTV Smarters Pro by WHMCS Smarters is listed free in Samsung’s US store. The Samsung version supports Xtream Codes, a TV guide, parental controls and multiple subscriptions. Its listing also says the app “does not supply or include any media or content” (Samsung store listing). Because the same developer also covers Apple devices, Smarters is the closest thing to a cross-device option.
LG TVs running webOS get their apps from the LG Content Store, after you sign in to an LG account (LG support). What the store carries can change, so search it on your own TV. Our guide to IPTV apps for LG TVs covers the options in detail.
Roku is the most limited of the three. Its apps come only from the Roku Streaming Store, so search that store for a player before you pay for a subscription.
Best IPTV player for Windows, Mac and Linux
A computer gives you the most freedom, and the three best options cost nothing.
IPTVnator is a free, open-source “cross-platform IPTV player application” for macOS, Windows and Linux, and it also comes as a self-hosted web app. IPTVnator reads M3U and M3U8 playlists, Xtream Codes and Stalker portals, and it shows an XMLTV guide (IPTVnator on GitHub). If you want a dedicated IPTV app on a laptop, start here.

Can you use VLC as an IPTV player? Yes. VLC plays the kinds of stream IPTV uses: web (HTTP) streams, multicast (UDP/RTP) streams and the MPEG-TS video format. VideoLAN also promises “No spyware, No ads, No user tracking” (VLC features).
VLC doubles as a one-minute test of any playlist link. In VLC, open Media, choose Open Network Stream, paste the address and press Play (VideoLAN documentation). If the stream plays there, the link itself works.
Can Kodi play IPTV? Yes, and you do not need a separate app. The PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on plays M3U playlists with XMLTV guides. Since Kodi 20 (Nexus), it accepts several playlist and guide pairs at once. Catch-up works only “if supported by the IPTV provider” (PVR IPTV Simple Client), which tells you the provider controls that feature, not the player.
For step-by-step help, read our guide to setting up IPTV on Windows or Mac.
Does an IPTV player come with channels?
No. Every developer in this guide says so in writing. TiviMate’s developer calls it “a media player only”. The Smarters listing says it “does not supply or include any media or content”. The GSE listing says “users must provide their own content”. IPTVnator’s repository says it “doesn’t provide any playlists or other digital content”.
That is why paying for premium buys features, never channels. A better guide grid or extra settings can make watching easier, but the list of channels stays exactly as empty as before.
Treat a “player” sold with channels already inside as a red flag. IPTVnator’s developer goes further and warns that sites selling IPTVnator subscriptions are not affiliated with the project.
Any decent player can open your playlist because the format is open. The M3U format is the basis of HLS, the open streaming standard that defines a playlist as a “UTF-8 text file containing URIs and descriptive tags” (IETF RFC 8216). So the playlist format is no reason to choose one app over another.
Do you need a subscription to use an IPTV player? Yes. The app is free or cheap, but the channels come from a separate provider.
What to look for when choosing an IPTV player
Once your device has narrowed the field, four things decide between the players that are left:
- Login type. Providers send either an Xtream Codes login or an M3U playlist link. Pick a player that accepts the one your provider sends. If you are unsure which you have, read M3U vs Xtream Codes.
- TV guide (EPG). The player displays the guide, but the guide data comes from your provider. A grid layout matters most on a TV. If the guide stays blank, here is how to fix an empty TV guide.
- Remote or touch. TiviMate is built for a remote, and its developer says it is not made for phones. On a phone or tablet, choose an app designed for touch.
- Price model. Players are free, free with a one-time upgrade, or free with a recurring subscription. Smarters Player Lite charges $1.99 once, while the GSE listing sells monthly to lifetime plans. Check which kind you are signing up for.
Buffering is rarely the player’s fault, so switching apps seldom fixes it. Our guide on why IPTV buffers covers the real causes.
If you are torn between TiviMate, IPTV Smarters and XCIPTV, our head-to-head of the three most common players compares them directly.
Are IPTV player apps safe? Check the developer, not the name
The player itself is ordinary software from a named developer. The risk comes from lookalike apps and unofficial downloads.
Lookalikes are real. On the App Store, an app titled “IPTV Smarters Player – PRO” comes from a different developer, Svitlana Pavlova, and sells in-app purchases of $13.95 and $1.99. Nothing on the listing says it is unsafe, but it is not the WHMCS Smarters app.
Before you install, read the developer name on the listing: WHMCS Smarters, Armobsoft FZE or VideoLAN for the main apps in this guide.

Install from official stores only. In May 2019, the Federal Trade Commission warned that if you download illegal pirate streaming apps or add-ons, “the chances are good that you’ll also download malware” (FTC consumer alert).
If an Android player ever came from outside the Play Store, keep Google Play Protect switched on. Play Protect “checks your device for potentially harmful apps from other sources” (Google Play Help).
Is an IPTV player legal? The player is legal software. Whether a stream is legal depends on the rights your provider holds, so check those yourself, along with the law where you live.
Your player is ready: now add a provider
The best IPTV player is the one your device’s store offers, from a developer whose name you have checked. Expect it to open empty: every player needs a provider before it shows a single channel.
PlayTVX states that after checkout it emails your login details and setup instructions, which you then enter in a compatible player. The site lists Smart TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, MAG and Enigma2. The players in this guide are independent apps, and none of them is owned by or affiliated with PlayTVX.
Once you know which player you will use, compare the PlayTVX subscription plans and pick the length that suits you.

More questions about choosing an IPTV player
What is the best free IPTV player?
The best free IPTV players are VLC, IPTVnator and Kodi with its PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, all of them free and open source (IPTVnator on GitHub). Smarters Player Lite is free to download, with an optional $1.99 upgrade. Free means the app costs nothing. The channels still come from a provider.
Is TiviMate better than IPTV Smarters?
TiviMate and IPTV Smarters suit different devices, so neither is better everywhere. TiviMate’s developer built it for Android TV boxes and remote control, and says it is not optimized for phones. IPTV Smarters runs on more platforms, including Samsung TVs and, as Smarters Player Lite, Apple devices (Samsung store listing).
Which IPTV player has the best EPG?
No IPTV player has the best EPG on its own, because the guide data comes from your provider. TiviMate shows it as a TV-style grid on a box, while IPTVnator and Kodi read XMLTV guides on a computer (PVR IPTV Simple Client). If the guide is empty, the player is rarely the cause.
Which IPTV player supports Xtream Codes?
According to their listings, TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, the App Store listing titled GSE Smart IPTV Player and IPTVnator all accept Xtream Codes logins (IPTVnator on GitHub). Kodi’s IPTV add-on and VLC work from M3U playlists or stream links instead. If your provider sends Xtream Codes, the best IPTV player for you is one of those four.
